All The Birds

All the Birds – Poulioi Di Multu is the collaboration of the artist Maria Varela with the women’s community Di Moulieri (from women in the Vlach dialect) in the creation of a hand weaved cape. The women chose their favorite patterns from their woven dowries. The patterns are called “birds” in Metsovo. Combining all the traditional birds, a new unique design was formed, which narrates the stories of all the women who participated in its creation. This new design was woven in a cape inspired by men’s traditional clothing. The women wear the traditional men’s cape decorated with designs woven by their mothers for them and are photographed in Metsovo.

The community Di Mullieri (From Women in the Vlach dialect) is a group of women living in Metsovo and nearby villages. The connecting element of the group is their love for the traditional weaving of Metsovo. Through creative activities they encourage knowledge exchange, the younger practical exercise their craft next to the older preserving the traditional craft and technique. The aim is to highlight the aesthetic and technical value of the weaves of Metsovo while at the same time the intangible culture of Metsovo and the Vlach heritage are promoted.
In the creation of the artwork All the Birds – Poulioi Di Multou participated: Vasiliki Theodoraki, Evdokia Bisa, Aphrodite Katsora, Chrysoula Stavraki, Eugenia Tzalonikou, Marilena Tzalonikou, Charoula Tzalonikou, Yolanda Tsarouchi, Maria Vadevouli, Doukitsa Zarkadi.

Urban Design Fiction Hackathon

In the post-digital era our relation with the urban landscape is ever-changing due to the fast pace technologic advancements and the blurring between the physical and the digital realm. State of the art technologies like augmented reality, physical computing, the Internet of Things (IoT) and wearable technology redefine the levels of interaction between ourselves and our surroundings. In this context, what kind of narratives could occur from the creation of objects? How would we imagine the future city and the collaborative networks of production?

 

Dataplay

Dataplay was a cluster of workshops about networks, data and their invisible flows in the urban environment. It aimed to explore the contemporary hybrid city, – participative, playful and searchable as it might be-, and discuss its challenges and contradictions. How perceptible are the new network architectures to the senses of the city inhabitants? How is the city influenced when every mediated action generates data? Well known artists from Berlin came to Athens in May 2013 in order to explore the city’s electromagnetic fields, to capture and map the city’s data body and to propose new free and independent models for sharing and distributing information.

Datenspiel was a project of Goethe-Institut Athen in collaboration with Frown creative platform and the support of University Research Institute of Applied Communication (U.R.I.A.C.) of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens present Dataplay.

Datenspiel was a parallel event of the international conference Hybrid City II – subtle rEvolutions www.media.uoa.gr/hybridcity

#Open : A Creative Commons Festival

The Open Source Movement is not related only to software issues, but it also promotes legitimacy, openness, sharing and the re-use of coding, content (texts, music, films, information, data, files) and knowledge. Furthermore, it introduces us to a world of a different value system. Creative Commons licenses, the most popular open licensing system, offer to creators the ability to legally distribute their work as they choose.
In collaboration with Creative Commons Greece  and with the support of Greek Free / Open Source Software Society (GFOSS) organize a two-days festival on the 7th and 8th of December at Frown. The #Open, Creative Commons in Greece festival addresses both the public and the creators through workshops, round tables and performances by Greek creators, who work with Open Software, Open Licensing, Open Hardware, and belong to the Open Source Movement.

  • the notion and the importance of Open Content
  • new media and the possibilities offered on Intellectual Property, Digitization and Distribution
  • Open Software/ applications in contemporary sound and video production
  • the Creative Commons licences and the concept of Intellectual Property in contemporary production

Arduino is a microprocessor that allows communication between computers and physical objects. The programming language of Arduino is based on is a simplification of C/C++ and enables the creation of electronic prototypes.

Processing is a programming language that was created by artists as a means of creative programming. It is a simplification of Java that facilitates visual programming and that enables instant visual result.

Ένα ξεχωριστό, ευφάνταστο δημιουργικό διήμερο για παιδιά από 7 έως 12 ετών όπου εμπλέκονται η τεχνολογία και το πείραμα με τη γνώση και την πρακτική εφαρμογή!
Το διήμερο φεστιβάλ παιδικών εργαστηρίων Hack The Day @ Michael Cacoyannis Foundation δίνει τη δυνατότητα στα παιδιά να μάθουν για την επιστήμη και την τεχνολογία μέσα από το παιχνίδι και την εξερεύνηση. Χρησιμοποιεί μεθοδολογίες της STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) και της κοινότητας του Maker Movement για να εξοπλίσει τα παιδιά με τη γνώση, την εμπειρία και τη δημιουργικότητα για να σχεδιάσουν και να δημιουργήσουν το δικό τους παρόν και λαμπρό μέλλον.

Η διήμερη δράση Hack The Day @ Michael Cacoyannis Foundation αποτελείται από έξι εργαστήρια διάρκειας τεσσάρων ωρών όπου τα παιδιά ανάλογα με τις ηλικιακές ομάδες και τα ενδιαφέροντά τους θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να ολοκληρώσουν ένα πρότζεκτ με θέματα που κυμαίνονται από εφαρμογές ηλεκτρονικών κυκλωμάτων και νέων τεχνολογιών σε δημιουργική χειροτεχνία, αρχιτεκτονικές κατασκευές, μηχανικά συστήματα και εικαστικές αφηγήσεις.

Τα εργαστήρια πραγματοποιούνται μέσα από μια κοινότητα εικαστικών, αρχιτεκτόνων, εκπαιδευτικών, μουσικών και τεχνολόγων που πιστεύουν στην πολυθεματική και ανοιχτή εκπαίδευση. Τα εργαστήρια αναδεικνύουν τη μοναδικότητα και τη συνεργασία και προωθούν τις δεξιότητες των παιδιών μέσα από την εξερεύνηση της γνώσης και την πρακτική εξάσκηση, διεγείροντας τη φαντασία, τη δημιουργικότητα, την περιέργεια και την έμπνευση για πειραματισμό.

Το Πρόγραμμα
LED Painting – Σάββατο 22.02 , 11:00 – 15:00, ηλικίες 7-10
Τα παιδιά αφού κατανοήσουν βασικές αρχές του ηλεκτρισμού και τη συνδεσμολογία ενός απλού κυκλώματος δημιουργούν τις δικές τους μικροκατασκευές με LED. Στη συνέχεια αφήνοντας ελεύθερη τη φαντασία τους ξεκινούν να δημιουργούν ζωγραφικές συνθέσεις χωρίς πινέλα, αλλά με τα πολύχρωμα led και τη βοήθεια του φωτογραφικού φακού!

Ε-Cards Σάββατο 22.02 , 11:00 – 15:00, ηλικίες 7-10
Tα παιδιά αφού κατανοήσουν βασικές αρχές του ηλεκτρισμού και τη συνδεσμολογία ενός απλού κυκλώματος, δημιουργούν τις δικές τους μοναδικές διαδραστικές κάρτες. Χρησιμοποιώντας πινέλα και αγώγιμη μπογιά τα παιδιά διακοσμούν την κάρτα ζωγραφίζοντας, ενώ ταυτόχρονα δημιουργούν ένα κύκλωμα το οποίο επιτρέπει στην κάρτα να ανάβει leds και να παίζει μουσική.

Μusic Plants – Σάββατο 22.02 , 11:00 – 15:00, ηλικίες 10-12
α παιδιά δημιουργούν μια μοναδική ορχήστρα που παίζει μουσική από τα φυτά. Ανακαλύπτοντας πώς τα φυτά αλλά και το ίδιο μας το σώμα αποτελούν αγωγούς του ηλεκτρισμού, σχεδιάζουν ένα μοναδικό κύκλωμα για την παραγωγή ήχου. Συνθέτουν τη μουσική τους αυτοσχεδιάζοντας και αγγίζοντας τα ίδια τα φυτά!

Εlectric Tree – Κυριακή 23.02, 11.00 – 15.00, ηλικίες 7-12
α παιδιά αφού κατανοήσουν τις αρχές του ηλεκτρισμού και των κυκλωμάτων δημιουργούν μοναδικές αυτόφωτες κατασκευές που συνθέτουν ένα δέντρο. Τα παιδιά ανακαλύπτουν πώς τα φρούτα αποτελούν αγώγιμα υλικά. Μέσα από χειροτεχνία και ηλεκτρονικές εφαρμογές καταφέρνουν να κατασκευάσουν μια μοναδική σύνθεση από αυτόφωτα φρούτα.


Solar Bots – Κυριακή 23.02, 11:00 – 15:00, ηλικίες 7-10
Tα παιδιά δημιουργούν το δικό τους ρομπότ που παίρνει την ενέργειά του από τον ήλιο. Το ρομπότ μπορεί να είναι όχημα με ροδάκια, ανεμιστήρας, ή αυτόματος μαρκαδόρος που τρέχει και ζωγραφίζει! Οι μαθητές θα εισαχθούν σε βασικές έννοιες του ηλεκτρισμού και των ηλεκτρονικών κυκλωμάτων, της χρήσης ηλιακής ενέργειας και θα μάθουν να χρησιμοποιούν εργαλεία για την κόλληση ηλεκτρονικών σε πλακέτα. Αφού κατανοήσουν και κατασκευάσουν το κύκλωμα τα παιδιά θα αλλάξουν την αμφίεση και θα δημιουργήσουν τον δικό τους ρομποτικό χαρακτήρα.

Color Sound Synthesis – Κυριακή 23.02, 11:00 – 15:00, ηλικίες 7-10
Tα παιδιά δημιουργώντας χρωματιστές κατασκευές χειροτεχνίας παράγουν ήχους ενώ όταν αυτές κινούνται επηρεάζουν διάφορες παραμέτρους του ήχου. Πώς θα καταφέρουν να βρουν τη σωστή ισορροπία σε μια χωρική, ομαδική σύνθεση ώστε να δημιουργήσουν ένα μοναδικό, τόσο οπτικό όσο και ηχητικό αποτέλεσμα;

Raw Rate – Kernel

Παρουσίαση της ομάδας KERNEL και προβολή του Raw Rate ενός νέου βίντεο που δημιουργήθηκε με υλικό που ανασύρθηκε από τον web server της εγκατάστασής τους Mirrors. Αποτελούμενο από στατιστικά δεδομένα και ακατέργαστη πληροφορία συλλεγμένη από παγκόσμιους ερευνητικούς οργανισμούς, το υλικό αυτό συνιστά βασικό στοιχείο μιας εν εξελίξει συλλογικής έρευνας που επιχειρεί να προσεγγίσει την ιδιαίτερη “υφή” της παρούσας ιστορικής στιγμής μας.

Αγγίζοντας ιδέες άυλων δικτύων και υλικών ροών, μοτίβων χρόνου, χώρου και δομής, το βίντεο εκτυλίσσεται ως μια σύνθεση μεταξύ πρωτογενούς πληροφορίας και αφήγησης.

 Η προβολή πλαισιώθηκε με παρουσίαση και συζήτηση γύρω από την τρέχουσα έρευνα και δουλειά της ομάδας.

Heath Bunting – How to build a new identity

*It is quite liberating to think that you can have another identity*

Presentation:

In the framework of the Status Project (2004 – ongoing), Heath Bunting explores the ability to create new mutable identities.The Status Project examines and maps the interconnections between persons and the UK system. Heath Bunting has been creating sets of databases, including over 10.000 entries, which in turn are depicted in software-generated maps. Each map represents the network of a given social status, such as the social status of a homeless person or a citizen of the European Union. Personal data such as an email account, a library card, a mobile phone contract or a credit card can expose our mobility in different systems and networks. Using tools from the web, such as email accounts and the public space, such as postal addresses, he explores traces in the system through their mobility within it and the exchange of their personal data.

Workshop:

During the workshop, Heath Bunting will introduce us to techniques and strategies on how to form new identities. The distribution of the workshop How to Build a New Legal Identity across Europe aims at exploring the characteristics of identity in each country.

Publication:

This book focuses on the work of artist Heath Bunting and it is also a documentation of the workshop “How to build a new legal identity” which was organised by Katerina Gkoutziouli and Frown and took place in May 2012 in Athens. This is a bilingual edition: English and Greek which was edited by Katerina Gkoutziouli, Marianna Christofi and Maria Varela and designed by Maria Glyka.

Learn a craft and quit it

“Learn a craft and quit it”*

* from greek saying: “Learn a craft and quit it. If you ever get hungry,  undertake it.”

This workshop series focus on Greek forgotten crafts. In each session a guest local artisan showed secrets and tips of a specific craftsmanship.

The creative hands-on workshop sessions offered participants the chance to try a range of design techniques and to develop new skills while encourage them to start developing their own creative styles. All sessions stress design and personal exploration. Moreover the events aimed to straighten the idea of togetherness and cultivate the feeling of community.
